The March Revolution

By March 1917 Russia was falling down.  There were food shortages and workers were on strike.  Women were striking against the shortage on food.  During this time Lenin had been spreading Marxist ideas.  Marx thought that the industrial working class would overthrow capitalism.  Although, Russia did not have large urban proletariat, so Lenin made an elite group to lead the revolution and set up a "dictatorship of the proletariat."  These people were small and were known and the Bolsheviks.  On April 16, 1917 Lenin returned to Russia from exile.  (World History Connections to Today Ellis Esler)

The November Revolution

In November 1917 the Red Guard (armed factory workers) joined with sailors from the Russian fleet n attacking the provisional government.  Members of the government were meeting in the Winter Palace when members of the Bolsheviks stormed in.  After they stormed the palace, they quickly sought out peace with Germany.  Many of the allied powers tried to come aid other countries but failed.  The end result of both revolutions is that Russia soon became a Communist country.  (World History Connections to Today Ellis Esler)
